Backpacking Around Africa 1975-1976

This book has had a long gestation period. The diary was left untouched for 15 years after it was completed in 1976. In 1992, while we were living in Indonesia, it was transcribed into Word and shared with family members.However, since our retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service we have come to realize that this trip completely changed our lives. Larry and I met as undergraduates at Rutgers-Newark and were married in April 1974. Rather than blow what little money we had on a honeymoon, we decided to work for about a year and save up enough money for a year- long trip around the world.As a result of the trip, and after we both completed graduate school, we decided that we wanted to work and live in the developing world. We had the good fortune to obtain positions with the U.S. Agency for International Development and went on to 25 year careers with the Agency, serving in Africa (Ghana), South Asia, (Bangladesh and Pakistan) and Southeast Asia (Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia). Thus, this trip was the opening act of an adulthood spent overseas, where we adopted two children and had many more traveling adventures as a family. Read more
